Meta is making significant adjustments to its artificial intelligence (AI) division, planning to lay off approximately 600 people from its core AI research team (FAIR), product AI, and infrastructure teams.

According to an internal memo obtained by Axios from AI head Alexandr Wang, the layoffs aim to reduce bureaucracy, speed up decision-making, and give teams more responsibility. Despite the layoffs, Meta will still retain thousands of AI positions.

Strategic Restructuring and New Leadership

The newly established TBD Lab department by Alexandr Wang will not be affected by these layoffs and will continue to expand. It has been reported that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had previously doubted the company's AI strategy, but now supports Wang's team to lead Meta's AI strategy.

This personnel and structural change comes amid tensions within the Meta AI department, as some individuals, including renowned AI scientist Yann LeCun, have reportedly had disagreements with the new management team.
