As artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly takes over business processes traditionally handled by humans, many AI agents will need to securely log into multiple systems to perform their tasks. To address the challenges businesses face in modern credential management, leading password management company 1Password announced the addition of AI agent security features to its extended access management platform (XAM).

In recent years, the rapid development of AI technology has sparked discussions about the future job market. Bill Gates recently predicted that only biologists, energy experts, and AI programmers would survive. However, with the rise of AI agents, the way businesses operate will undergo significant changes. For example, in software development, OpenAI's upcoming "agent software engineers" will not only augment existing development teams but may potentially replace traditional developers entirely. This shift will likely have a significant impact on enterprise security controls.
1Password CEO David Fojt said, "We're on the cusp of a significant shift. AI agents have the potential to dramatically increase productivity and innovation, and they need to log into systems just like humans to do their jobs." He pointed out that traditional identity and access management solutions were not designed for non-human, non-machine identities (such as AI agents) and therefore cannot meet their needs.
1Password's co-CEO Jeff Shiner said the disruptive potential of AI agents lies in their ability to operate at machine speed, scaling workflows in unprecedented ways. He emphasized that legacy security models cannot keep pace with the speed and scale of AI agents.
In this release, 1Password introduced three new AI agent features to the XAM platform: partitioned vaults specifically for AI agents, a scoped API for programmable management of vault items, and a software development kit (SDK) to help software engineers develop and automate workflows. These new features will be available to developers via SDKs in JavaScript, Python, and Go, with documentation published on 1Password's official developer portal. These new features are available at no extra cost to customers on 1Password's Business password management plans.
