Opera, a pioneer in web browsers from Norway and China, has been leading innovation in the browser space for years. During this time, Opera has continuously introduced groundbreaking features such as tabbed browsing, synchronization, and built-in search. Now, Opera is once again at the forefront of technology with its new Browser Operator feature, designed to provide users with an intelligent browsing experience powered by AI agents.
An AI agent represents an emerging trend in artificial intelligence, capable of executing complex tasks beyond single queries or command-line operations. At the "Opera Days" event last month, Opera showcased the versatility of this technology. Product marketing technology director Henrik Lexow demonstrated the powerful capabilities of AI agents, including complex travel arrangements and on-demand flower delivery.
The Opera browser spans multiple platforms, from high-end gaming devices like Opera GX to low-end mobile phones like Opera Mini, which boasts nearly 70 million monthly active users in Africa and remains the mainstay product driving Opera’s global download count exceeding one billion. Since its launch in 2005, Opera Mini has focused on providing internet access on low-end devices. It achieves this through page compression and snapshot technologies, reducing the need for data-intensive websites, thus offering a smoother browsing experience under low bandwidth conditions.
Despite the distinct features of different versions of the Opera browser, they all share the same core engine. This means that Opera Mini users can enjoy AI models typically requiring high-performance devices. Meanwhile, Aria, Opera's built-in AI assistant, will further enhance response speed in version 2.0, ensuring a consistent user experience across countries.
Notably, Aria supports 50 languages, each with related prompts to help users better utilize the service. Opera's AI research leader Monika Kurczyńska stated that while usage habits differ across countries, they are addressing the challenge of multilingual support through bi-weekly AI feature updates, aiming to cover billions of Opera users globally.
