In the latest developments in the field of artificial intelligence, Jerry Tworek, Vice President of Research at OpenAI, recently disclosed information about the upcoming next-generation foundational model — GPT-5 — on Reddit. This new model is vividly called the "All-in-One," integrating multiple existing products, including Codex, Operator, Deep Research, and Memory, to reduce the hassle for users switching between different tools.

In this Q&A session, Tworek shared the development background of Codex and its achievements in enhancing programming efficiency. Initially considered a subsidiary project aimed at optimizing internal workflows, the team found that using Codex could increase programming efficiency by approximately three times after practical validation. This result not only motivated developers but also prompted OpenAI to explore more flexible pricing models, possibly including pay-as-you-go options.

Regarding the capabilities of GPT-5, Tworek stated that the core goal of this new model is to enhance the performance of existing models, particularly in executing computer tasks. He mentioned that there is already a product called Operator that can perform tasks on computers; although it is currently in the research phase, it will continue to improve and become an effective assistant in the future.

In response to some common questions, Tworek emphasized that Codex is not just suitable for senior engineers; ordinary developers can also utilize its capabilities to solve complex problems. Additionally, Codex currently mainly relies on runtime-loaded information rather than directly accessing the latest library documentation. OpenAI is considering enhancing the model's information update capability through retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technology.

When discussing the future direction of software engineering, the Codex team expressed their hope to more efficiently translate software requirements into executable software versions, thereby bringing convenience to developers. At the same time, OpenAI promised to provide free API credits for Plus and Pro users in the future, making it easier to use the Codex CLI.

OpenAI is continuously improving its tools and models to become an indispensable assistant for developers and pave the way for future technological development.
