Recently, Reddit filed a lawsuit against the San Francisco Superior Court, accusing AI startup Anthropic of making over 100,000 unauthorized accesses to its platform since July 2024, despite knowing that robots were prohibited from accessing it. This action has drawn significant attention, with Reddit accusing Anthropic not only of failing to comply with platform rules but also of pretending to uphold ethics and law in public.
In the complaint, Reddit described Anthropic as a "latecomer claiming itself as the white knight of the AI industry," implying that it has deviated from this image. Ben Lee, Reddit's Chief Legal Officer, stated that Anthropic's commercial use of Reddit content could potentially bring the company billions of dollars in revenue. He emphasized that, in an era being continuously reshaped by AI technology, human emotions and genuine conversations conveyed by Reddit are particularly valuable.

It is worth noting that Reddit signed an agreement with Google last February, authorizing the latter to use its platform data for AI training. This deal was valued at approximately $60 million, and Reddit had a similar-sized agreement with another undisclosed company. This shows that Reddit’s content is gradually becoming an important resource for AI training, but it also exposes it to more copyright disputes and challenges.
In fact, this is not Anthropic's first encounter with copyright issues. As early as August last year, three authors filed a class-action lawsuit against it in California Federal Court, accusing it of illegally obtaining tens of thousands of copyrighted books to build a multimillion-dollar business model. In October 2023, Universal Music also sued Anthropic, accusing it of systematically and massively infringing on copyrighted song lyrics.
This incident not only reflects the tense relationship between current AI technology and copyright laws but also raises deep reflection on how AI companies can legally utilize online content. With the rapid development of AI technology, finding a balance between protecting copyrights and promoting innovation will be an urgent issue to address in the future.
