At the recently concluded Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC25), Apple announced a series of updates regarding its operating systems, services, and software. This included a completely new interface called "Liquid Glass," as well as updated naming conventions. However, to the disappointment of many eagerly waiting users, Apple did not announce the highly anticipated personalized AI-driven version of Siri, as expected.
During the conference, Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, only briefly mentioned the updates to Siri. He stated: "As we previously shared, we will continue to work on features that make Siri more personalized. This work requires more time to meet our high-quality standards, and we look forward to sharing more information next year." This statement suggests that Apple does not expect to release further updates about the new Siri before 2026. This timeline is particularly noteworthy in the rapidly advancing field of artificial intelligence.
The more personalized version of Siri was first unveiled at WWDC24 last year, with Apple stating it would be "Apple's next major move." The new version of Siri will be able to understand the user's "personal background," including relationships, communication styles, and daily routines, while also being more functional by performing more complex operations within and across applications.
However, Bloomberg reported that the personalized Siri version currently under development, despite being fully functional, lacks stability. The report stated that due to quality issues, Siri only functions properly two-thirds of the time, which prevented its scheduled release. In March, Apple officially announced the delay of Siri's release and indicated that the update would take longer than expected.
In addition, Apple made personnel adjustments to its Siri project, replacing John Giannandrea, senior vice president of machine learning and artificial intelligence strategy, with Mike Rockwell, who was involved in the Vision Pro project. This indicates that Apple is working hard to reorganize its AI technology in order to catch up with competitors like OpenAI and Google.
Collaborating with OpenAI, Siri continues to improve. When users ask questions that Siri cannot answer, they are transferred to ChatGPT for processing. Additionally, Apple has updated the upcoming iOS26 system; the AI image generation application Image Playground has been upgraded to use ChatGPT. Moreover, Apple made other AI-related commitments at WWDC25, including supporting developers in accessing basic models on devices, real-time translation, Genmoji upgrades, and visual intelligence improvements.
