The UK government recently launched the "Artificial Intelligence Opportunity Plan," which invests 2 billion pounds to enhance the country's leadership in the field of artificial intelligence. However, with the rapid development of artificial intelligence, electricity demand is also rising sharply. The government needs to ensure that the goal of increasing computing power twentyfold within the next five years can be achieved, ensuring that the power grid can support this massive demand, otherwise the UK may face a slowdown in AI development, increased operational costs, and reliance on unsustainable energy sources.

To address the power demand of the artificial intelligence industry, the UK Minister for Energy and Technology convened the second meeting of the Artificial Intelligence Energy Commission. This meeting brought together Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Google, energy providers, the energy regulator Ofgem, and the National Energy System Operator (NESO), aiming to predict future energy demands, analyze the application of artificial intelligence across different industries, and ensure that the power grid is adequately prepared.

Since its establishment in January of this year, the Artificial Intelligence Energy Commission has been working closely with Ofgem and NESO to reform the electricity connection process. These reform measures are still pending approval from Ofgem but are expected to unlock more than 400 gigawatts of additional power generation capacity, supporting the expansion of artificial intelligence projects. These meetings have not only facilitated dialogue between the government, technology companies, and energy companies but have also accelerated the implementation of the necessary changes.

As part of the "Artificial Intelligence Opportunity Plan," the government also introduced the concept of "Artificial Intelligence Growth Zones." These zones will be established nationwide to support the development of the artificial intelligence industry. The government believes that these zones will attract billions of pounds in investment and create numerous jobs across the country, promoting local economic prosperity. However, the plan to establish these AI zones also faces some challenges, especially in areas with a high population of people in poverty.

Local councils have already expressed interest in establishing AI development zones to the government, but this has also raised concerns about residents' well-being. The emergence of new job opportunities may lead to an increase in housing demand, thereby driving up rents and placing pressure on residents whose living costs are already high. The government hopes to take measures to protect these residents, including providing welfare payments and skills retraining opportunities to help them escape poverty.
