AI hyperscaler CoreWeave has announced plans to acquire data center provider Core Scientific through a stock transaction worth approximately $9 billion. This move aims to deepen CoreWeave's presence in the AI cloud infrastructure sector, reduce operational costs, and decrease reliance on external suppliers. The transaction is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2025.
This acquisition will significantly strengthen CoreWeave's infrastructure capabilities. Core Scientific has an existing power capacity of 1.3 gigawatts and additional expansion potential of over 1 gigawatt, providing strong energy support for CoreWeave to meet its growing compute-intensive AI workload demands.
As an "AI hyperscaler" focused on providing cloud infrastructure for AI workloads, CoreWeave is actively expanding its advantages in the competitive AI infrastructure market. In March this year, OpenAI invested $1.2 billion in CoreWeave, highlighting its important position in the industry. Additionally, reports indicate that Microsoft's reduction in investment in AI data centers has also brought further development opportunities for CoreWeave. Through this strategic acquisition, CoreWeave is expected to further consolidate its leading position in the AI infrastructure field.
