OpenAI has quietly added Shopify as a third-party search partner to enhance its shopping search features, resulting in richer shopping search results.
Quietly Updated Documentation, Not Officially Announced
The addition of Shopify was not officially announced but has been quietly embedded in the OpenAI ChatGPT search documentation. LinkedIn user Aleyda Solís recently noticed that OpenAI has updated its search documentation, adding Shopify to the list of third-party search providers.
According to her post: OpenAI added Shopify and Bing as third-party search providers in its ChatGPT search documentation on May 15, 2025, while just weeks earlier, OpenAI announced an enhanced shopping experience on April 28.
Ability to Display Merchants Across Multiple Platforms
OpenAI's shopping search is returning results from various platforms. For example, searching for "dog supplies" not only returns websites hosted on Shopify, but also websites hosted on Turbify (previously known as Yahoo Stores).
For specific queries, rich results with images come from Shopify and Amazon merchants. At least one of the shopping results listed in the recommended sellers is a merchant hosted on the Turbify e-commerce platform.
Features of ChatGPT Shopping Function
OpenAI recently launched a shopping feature for ChatGPT Search. The product listings resemble search results and sometimes appear in rich text results, including images and other shopping-related information such as rating stars.
ChatGPT Search uses images and structured metadata related to prices and product descriptions, which are likely Schema structured data, although it is not explicitly stated. ChatGPT may generate product titles, descriptions, and reviews based on data received from third-party websites, and sometimes even summarize reviews.
Merchant Ranking and Data Sources
The ranking of merchants depends on how OpenAI receives merchant data from third-party data providers, currently including Bing and Shopify.
E-commerce stores that have not yet joined Shopify can apply to have their products included in OpenAI's shopping search results. Stores that choose to join must also join OpenAI's web crawler OAI-SearchBot.
This collaboration will provide OpenAI's shopping search function with a broader range of product data sources, while offering new exposure opportunities for merchants on the Shopify platform.
