Renowned artificial intelligence company OpenAI seems to have grown tired of Google's Veo3 dominating the generative AI video field, and is actively developing its first text-to-video model, the successor to Sora, called Sora2. Clues found on the social platform X suggest that references to "Sora2" have already appeared in OpenAI's server code, indicating that a brand new generative video model is about to be released.
Sora was released on December 9, 2024, and has not seen any major updates for more than six months. Although its popularity has somewhat declined, it recently resurfaced in the public eye after Microsoft integrated it for free into Bing Video Creator.
BleepingComputer reported that Sora2 is not yet ready for public release, but OpenAI is expected to announce more information about the model in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Google has also been active. Google has announced that Veo3 is now freely available to college students who join the Gemini AI Pro program. For non-students, they can experience Veo3 by registering for Vertex AI development mode using free credits from Google Cloud.
As OpenAI advances the development of Sora2 and Google further popularizes Veo3, competition in the generative AI video field is undoubtedly set to become even more intense. We will watch closely to see how these two tech giants perform in the future.
What do you think the release of Sora2 will mean for the generative AI video market? How might it change the way content creators work?
