According to a recent report released by Southeastern Oklahoma State University (SOU), about one-third of Americans have started using AI tools, such as ChatGPT, to help them with career transitions. The report is based on a survey of 1,000 Americans from four different generations, aiming to understand the role of AI in the current rapidly changing US labor market.

The survey found that more than half of the respondents said they are actively considering changing jobs or transitioning careers, with the highest percentage being 57% among Generation Z, followed by 55% among Millennials, 50% among Generation X, and only 12% among the Baby Boomers.

Among those who said AI has helped them with their career transition, 43% used AI tools to write resumes and cover letters, while 47% used AI to research new job opportunities, including higher-paying positions. Notably, nearly one-fifth of the respondents (18%) said AI suggested entirely new career paths that they had never considered before.

However, despite many people relying on AI for career advice, the survey also showed that most respondents were cautious about the information provided by AI. 60% of respondents said they preferred to trust the opinions of human career counselors, while only 7% chose to believe AI. Some people (17%) even followed AI's advice, even if it contradicted the advice they had previously received from human counselors.

Among different age groups, the main career opportunities focused on the technology sector, followed by healthcare and finance. As AI technology continues to develop, many people believe this could lead to the disappearance of a large number of white-collar jobs. For example, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, predicted that AI will eliminate half of the white-collar jobs within the next five years. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy also stated that AI-driven automation will replace some human jobs while making other positions more "interesting" and creating entirely new roles.

Data on hiring in technology companies also shows that as AI tools begin to take over many routine tasks that were previously done by young, less experienced employees, tech companies have reduced the number of new computer science graduates they hire. In addition, in the intense talent competition in Silicon Valley, competition between companies has become fiercer, especially for top talent in artificial intelligence research, which is scarce. Many companies are willing to pay high salaries to attract outstanding researchers who can play a key role in technological breakthroughs.
