Recently, Google announced an important update to its Chrome browser, introducing an AI-generated store review feature aimed at helping U.S. consumers choose the best shopping locations. Users can simply click the icon to the left of the browser address bar to view a pop-up window that provides information about a store's credibility in areas such as product quality, shopping experience, price, customer service, and return policies.
This new feature is currently available only in English and is launched on the desktop version of Chrome. Google stated that these store summaries will be generated based on reviews from multiple partners, including Bazaarvoice, Bizrate Insights, Reputation.com, Reseller Ratings, ScamAdviser, Trustpilot, TurnTo, Yotpo, Verified Reviews, and others.
Google hopes that these summaries will provide a safer and more efficient shopping experience. At the same time, this feature also helps Google gain an advantage in competing with retail giant Amazon. Amazon has already launched several AI features, including summaries of product ratings and reviews, helping customers find suitable clothing, providing product recommendations and comparisons, and more.
This update also means that Google faces potential competitive threats from Chrome in the global browser market. New AI-driven browsers like Perplexity's Comet, The Browser Company's Dia, Opera Neon, and potential competitors from OpenAI are prompting Google to consider how to integrate AI more directly into its own browser. Google is currently developing an AI agent that can control Chrome to perform various tasks on behalf of users. In addition, Google recently added support for the Gemini AI assistant in Chrome, available to Gemini subscribers.
The newly launched AI store summary feature is part of Google's broader efforts to build a modern shopping platform. Google has already used AI to help customers find products they are interested in, provide personalized product recommendations, and even allow users to virtually try on clothes. Furthermore, Google is developing better price tracking tools, shopping AI modes, and AI-driven convenient checkout features, the latter two were first announced at this year's Google I/O Developer Conference.
