Google recently announced an important update to its Chrome browser, introducing an AI-generated store review feature designed to help U.S. consumers make more informed shopping decisions. This feature will be activated by a small icon in the left side of the browser's address bar. Clicking it will open a window that displays reputation information about the store, including product quality, shopping experience, price, customer service, and return policies.
Currently, this feature is only available in English and will summarize user reviews from multiple partners, including Bazaarvoice, Bizrate Insights, Reputation.com, Reseller Ratings, ScamAdviser, Trustpilot, TurnTo, and Yotpo. These reviews aggregate real consumer experiences and can provide valuable references for users.
This update will initially be available only for the desktop version of Chrome, and Google has not yet confirmed when the AI review feature will be extended to mobile devices. Google stated that the launch of this new feature aims to enhance consumer shopping safety and efficiency. However, with retail giants like Amazon launching AI technologies to summarize product reviews, recommend products, and compare prices, Google faces increasing competitive pressure.
In recent years, Google Chrome browser has faced challenges from emerging AI browsers such as Comet from Perplexity, Dia from The Browser Company, Opera Neon, and even potential competitors from OpenAI. This has forced Google to accelerate the integration of AI technology into its browser. For example, Google is developing an AI agent that can automatically perform various tasks for users, and recently added support for the Gemini AI assistant in Chrome for Gemini subscribers.
This change is also part of Google's broader strategy to improve the shopping experience. Google has already used AI to help users find products they are interested in, provide personalized recommendations, virtual try-ons for clothing, and develop better price tracking tools and AI-based shopping experiences. Related AI features will be gradually launched this fall, bringing more convenient shopping methods for consumers.
