With the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, tech companies are increasingly in need of new data centers, especially due to the surge in chatbot users. While this trend has driven industry progress, it has also brought a serious issue: the power consumption of AI data centers is extremely high, and how to maintain continuous power supply has become an urgent challenge.

In response to this situation, Google is actively exploring solutions to alleviate the pressure on the U.S. power grid during peak electricity usage. In a blog post, Google stated that it has signed two new utility agreements with Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), aiming to reduce the power consumption of AI data centers during peak hours. This demand response program is expected to launch in 2023, with the core purpose of effectively managing the power usage of data centers and reducing the burden on the grid when necessary.
Google said that the implementation of this plan will allow large power loads, such as data centers, to connect more quickly to the grid, thereby reducing the need for new power plants and power generation facilities. This not only helps grid operators manage electricity supply more efficiently but also lays the foundation for sustainable development in the future. Notably, these two agreements are the first cases where machine learning workloads are adjusted to reduce power consumption, marking an important step forward for Google in energy management.
Additionally, Google's experience is built on successful collaboration with the Omaha Public Power District (OPPD). In several grid events last year, Google successfully reduced the power demand related to machine learning workloads, easing the burden on the grid. This provided a good example for the company to seek similar opportunities in other regions.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the energy demand of AI data centers could increase fourfold by 2030, and by the end of this century, their electricity consumption could approach Japan's total current electricity usage. This prospect has prompted tech companies to actively seek various feasible energy solutions, from investing in and building nuclear power plants to expanding the use of renewable energy, in an effort to meet the growing electricity demand.
