The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced the establishment of a dedicated task force focused on artificial intelligence (AI), aimed at enhancing the agency's innovation capabilities and operational efficiency through the responsible use of AI technology. The task force will be led by the SEC's Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer, Valerie Szczepanik.

The SEC recognizes the transformative potential of AI and has established this AI task force to accelerate the integration of AI and strengthen the SEC's mission. The task force will coordinate various efforts within the agency, promote cross-departmental and interdisciplinary collaboration, help the SEC efficiently address various challenges in the development of AI technology, remove barriers to progress, focus on maximizing the benefits of AI applications, and ensure the integrity of governance structures. In addition, the task force will support the innovative work of the SEC's departments and offices and promote the responsible integration of AI.
SEC Chairman Paul S. Atkins stated: "The AI task force will empower all SEC employees to use AI tools and systems to enhance their work capabilities, accelerate innovation, and improve efficiency and accuracy. By fostering an innovative culture throughout the agency, we will further achieve our mission of protecting investors, maintaining fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and promoting capital formation."
Valerie Szczepanik expressed her gratitude for being appointed as the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer and emphasized that the task force's goal is to integrate and coordinate the AI transformation efforts within the SEC. She looks forward to building upon the work already underway in the SEC's departments and offices to further enhance the overall capability of AI innovation and implement AI solutions that are reliable, effective, and supportive of the agency's mission.
Valerie Szczepanik previously served as Director of the SEC's Center for Innovation and Financial Technology Strategy, as a Senior Advisor for Digital Assets and Innovation, and as Deputy Chief in the Division of Corporation Finance. She also served as Assistant Director in the Enforcement Division and as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York. She holds a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Georgetown University and a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
