Recently, the artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, based in San Francisco, announced the launch of a new learning mode for its Claude AI assistant, aiming to transform this chatbot from a simple Q&A tool into a teaching partner. With the rapid development of the education market, tech giants are vying to enter this field. Anthropic hopes to reduce students' reliance on AI-generated answers by emphasizing guided learning.

Anthropic, Claude

This new feature will be available today, applicable to Claude.ai and the Claude Code programming tool. A spokesperson for Anthropic said their goal is not to create an AI that replaces human abilities, but to develop an AI that can enhance human capabilities in different user scenarios. This philosophy is particularly important in the education sector, especially with the widespread use of AI tools, where educators are generally concerned that students may rely too much on direct answers from AI.

Currently, the competition for AI educational tools has reached a fever pitch. OpenAI launched the learning mode of ChatGPT in mid-July, while Google released the guided learning features of its Gemini assistant in early August and promised to invest $1 billion in AI education projects over the next three years. As the school season approaches, these companies hope to gain more market share among students and educational institutions.

Claude AI's new learning mode adopts a Socratic approach, encouraging users to explore complex concepts through questioning rather than providing direct answers. This method was initially introduced in the Claude Education version and is now available to all users. In addition, Claude Code offers two learning modes for developers: explanation mode and learning mode. The former provides detailed explanations of coding decisions and their pros and cons, while the latter pauses when writing code, allowing developers to complete parts marked with "#TODO" comments, thus promoting collaboration and problem-solving.

Although the business case for adopting this learning mode seems counterintuitive for enterprises, as it may slow down development progress, Anthropic believes this approach helps developers learn on the job and improve their professional skills. This design philosophy reflects Anthropic's emphasis on human-machine collaboration, distinguishing itself from the industry trend of pursuing fully autonomous AI tools.

With the launch of these new features, Anthropic hopes to quickly iterate based on user feedback and continuously improve the learning mode experience. In addition, the company is exploring ways to further enhance Claude's competitiveness in the educational AI field through visualization, goal setting, and personalization.
