Although GPT-5 has just been released, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed the company's ambitious future plans during a media event last week. He clearly stated that GPT-6 is already under development, and its release interval will be shorter than that between GPT-4 and GPT-5. Altman emphasized that the core breakthrough of GPT-6 lies in memory and personalization, which will be key to achieving a truly personalized chat experience.
Memory and Emotion: Shaping the Future of AI
Altman pointed out that the future GPT-6 will not only respond to user instructions but also adjust according to individual preferences, habits, and characteristics. He emphasized that the memory function is central to achieving this vision. "People desire the memory function; they want products to understand them," he explained. GPT-6 needs to remember users' identities, preferences, and unique traits and make personalized adjustments accordingly, even allowing users to create chatbots that match their personal style.
To better optimize the product experience, OpenAI is collaborating with psychologists to guide product design by measuring users' emotional responses and long-term well-being. Although the relevant data has not been made public yet, Altman mentioned that it may be disclosed in the future.
Staying Neutral, Embracing Customization
When discussing the product direction, Altman also mentioned an executive order recently issued by the Trump administration, requiring AI systems used by the federal government to remain ideologically neutral and customizable. He stated that future versions of ChatGPT will comply with this requirement, meaning they will maintain a neutral stance while allowing wide-ranging adjustments by users. He gave an example: "If you want it to be more radical, it can be more radical; if you want it to be more conservative, it can do that as well."
