Zoom has announced the launch of a new AI assistant called "Zoom AI Companion." This change rebrands its previous Zoom IQ and is now available to all paid users. Zoom states that this AI assistant is designed to help users tackle various challenges in their daily work, providing more practical smart services.

"Zoom AI Companion" has multiple features that can help users write chat replies, save time, and focus on important tasks. If a participant is late, the AI assistant will promptly summarize the key points of the meeting discussion, ensuring they can quickly catch up with the meeting progress. Additionally, it can answer specific questions about meeting content, automatically generate meeting summaries, identify important information, and provide follow-up action suggestions for participants.

Zoom also plans to expand the capabilities of the AI Companion in the future. Users will be able to interact with the assistant using natural language to get support for tasks such as meeting preparation, summarizing chat records, integrating meeting summaries, writing emails, and finding relevant documents. At the same time, the AI assistant will assist in submitting support tickets during meetings, provide real-time information, and analyze call and message content.

At the time of launching the AI assistant, Zoom introduced its "federated approach" for selecting AI models, aiming to enhance user experience by dynamically integrating its own large language model (LLM) along with technologies from Meta Llama2, OpenAI, and Anthropic. This strategy allows users to enjoy new features without worrying about how to choose the right model.

However, the release of this AI assistant has also sparked some controversy. Previously, Zoom updated its terms of service, planning to use user-generated data to train its AI models, which caused strong public opposition. To address user concerns, Zoom clarified in a blog post, stating that it will strictly control the use of data: "Zoom will not use any of your audio, video, chat records, screen sharing, attachments, or other communication content to train Zoom's or third-party artificial intelligence models."

In the initial version of AI Companion, all AI features are disabled by default. Administrators and account operators will have the authority to decide whether to enable these features. Even if administrators enable the relevant features, meeting hosts can further control the use of these features in each meeting, and participants can check the status of the AI tools being used.

Zoom is not unfamiliar with the application of AI. In 2022, the company faced public scrutiny for potentially adding emotional AI features, as people feared this practice might damage user trust.
