The global team collaboration software giant Atlassian announced on Wednesday that it will acquire the New York startup The Browser Company for $610 million in cash, officially entering the AI browser market. This acquisition aims to leverage the latter's Dia and Arc browser technologies to create a specialized AI-driven browser experience for knowledge workers.
The Browser Company was founded in 2019 and is known for its innovative browser design. Its Arc browser, launched in 2022, features built-in whiteboards and shared tag groups, challenging mainstream browsers such as Chrome and Safari. The company's Dia browser, launched in June this year, is in the testing phase and focuses on AI interaction features, including multi-tab AI assistant conversations.
Atlassian's CEO stated that existing browsers are primarily designed for web browsing rather than work scenarios, and they cannot understand users' working environments or connect with business processes. The company hopes to redefine the workplace browser in the AI era by combining The Browser Company's innovative design with Atlassian's experience in enterprise collaboration tools.
According to the transaction arrangement, The Browser Company will continue to operate independently under Atlassian, focusing on the development and promotion of the Dia browser. Dia's goal is to "make more people use AI browsers," transforming websites into interactive tools through AI technology, supporting complex workflows from scheduling to design reviews.
Atlassian has over 300,000 enterprise customers, including more than 80% of the Fortune 500 companies, which will provide strong support for Dia's market promotion. The company also has rich experience in AI applications, with more than 2.3 million monthly active users on its platform AI features.
Although the Arc browser has been moved to maintenance mode, some of its features will be integrated into Dia, while adding enterprise-level cybersecurity and compliance features to meet the needs of large enterprises.
This acquisition comes at a time when competition in the AI browser market is intensifying. The Browser Company had previously engaged in acquisition negotiations with AI search company Perplexity and OpenAI. Microsoft Edge's Copilot feature, Perplexity's browser plans, and Opera's AI features indicate that AI browsers are becoming the new battlefield for enterprise productivity tools.
The founder of The Browser Company believes that "the browser is becoming the new operating system." Through cooperation with Atlassian, Dia is expected to achieve cross-platform upgrades, especially enhancing support for the Windows platform. Atlassian plans to integrate its core products such as Jira and Confluence with Dia's AI features to build a smarter workplace ecosystem.
The transaction is expected to be completed in the second quarter of Atlassian's fiscal year 2026, with limited short-term financial impact, but long-term potential will gradually manifest after 2028. This acquisition marks an important transformation of the browser from a traditional web browsing tool to a workplace productivity platform.
