Recently, the AI search company Perplexity announced that its innovative Comet browser is now available to all Perplexity Pro users in India, making it the second country after the United States to gain broader access to Comet. This launch takes effect today, aiming to provide users with an AI-driven browsing experience, automate tasks, and enhance productivity in a rapidly digitalizing economy.

The Comet browser first debuted in July 2025 as a "smart agent" browser based on the Chromium framework, integrating Perplexity's advanced AI models, including OpenAI's GPT-4o, Anthropic's Claude3.5Sonnet, and its proprietary Sonar LLM.

This browser transforms traditional passive web browsing into an interactive, task-oriented experience. Users can directly ask their AI assistant questions within the browser, completing tasks such as webpage summaries, product comparisons, email drafts, meeting arrangements, and even restaurant reservations. It also enhances privacy protection by storing sensitive data like browsing history and credentials locally.

This expansion into the Indian market follows the full release to Pro users in August, marking Perplexity's strategic move in global AI adoption. As a mobile-first market, India holds significant growth potential. Perplexity's collaboration with India's largest telecom operator, Bharti Airtel, provides free Pro subscriptions to over 360 million users, further promoting the popularity of Comet in this market.

In its announcement, Perplexity stated: "Comet aims to be a thinking partner for users, not just a browser." It supports seamless integration with enterprise tools such as Gmail and calendars, allowing users to handle multi-step workflows without switching applications. Early user feedback shows that features like Comet's voice mode and default ad blocking significantly reduce context switching and improve work efficiency.

Currently, the Comet browser is available only to Perplexity Pro (20 dollars per month) and Max (200 dollars per month) subscribers, with some users on a waitlist through invitations also able to use it. The mobile version of Comet is under development, with the Android version already open for pre-orders on the Google Play Store. As Perplexity continues to update daily, Comet's smart agent features, such as active research and personalized recommendations, suggest that AI agents may redefine roles in areas such as recruitment, research, and administrative assistance.
