Google Quantum AI, the quantum computing division of Google, announced on October 2nd local time that it has completed the acquisition of Atlantic Quantum, a quantum computing startup spun off from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). The entire team of Atlantic Quantum will join Google to jointly advance the development of quantum computing technology.
The core of this acquisition lies in Atlantic Quantum's focus on developing highly integrated quantum computing hardware. The startup's modular quantum chip stack integration technology is seen as key to expanding Google Quantum AI's superconducting qubit hardware scale, which will effectively accelerate Google's progress toward large-scale error-corrected quantum computers and ultimately achieve real-world applications.
Google Quantum AI continues to make breakthroughs in the field of quantum computing. The department launched the Willow quantum chip at the end of 2024, which demonstrated remarkable computing power, completing computational tasks that would take traditional supercomputers 1025 years in just 5 minutes.
By integrating Atlantic Quantum's advanced hardware integration technology, Google is actively overcoming the challenges of scaling superconducting qubits, further solidifying its leading position in the next generation of computing fields.
