To support this infrastructure growth, Google will also collaborate with the Electrical Training Alliance (ETA) to fund a program that integrates AI tools into apprenticeship training programs. This initiative is expected to help over 160 apprentices prepare for energy, technology, and infrastructure roles in the region.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster stated that Google's investment will make the state "an emerging leader in technology and innovation." He emphasized that the state is proud to support Google's operations in Dorchester and Berkeley counties and looks forward to the numerous opportunities created by this collaboration.
However, the expansion of data centers also brings environmental challenges. Some past projects have been criticized for their high energy and water consumption. In 2024, critics raised concerns about Google's discounted electricity rate agreement with Dominion Energy and the water withdrawal required for data cooling. In response, Google emphasized its sustainability initiatives in South Carolina, including the use of recycled water and closed-loop cooling systems, and funding local energy efficiency and water conservation projects.
In the coming years, whether South Carolina can maintain this momentum responsibly will be an important test. If successful, the state will not only be home to Google's servers, but also become the cornerstone of the future of artificial intelligence in the United States.
