Coco Robotics is a startup focused on last-mile delivery that recently announced the establishment of a new physical artificial intelligence laboratory in collaboration with Professor Bolei Zhou from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Bolei Zhou has also been appointed as the Chief Artificial Intelligence Scientist at Coco Robotics, aiming to further advance the company's research in robot automation.

Coco Robotics was founded in 2020 and initially relied on remote operators to help its delivery robots avoid obstacles on the road. The company's co-founder and CEO, Zach Rash, stated that the goal of Coco Robotics has always been to make its delivery robots fully autonomous, thus reducing delivery costs. Currently, they have collected more than five years of data, covering millions of kilometers of driving mileage, which provides an important foundation for developing reliable real-world AI systems.

Rash pointed out that Coco Robotics now has enough data to accelerate research in physical AI. Professor Zhou has made remarkable achievements in the fields of computer vision and robotics, especially in the micro-mobility sector. His joining will bring new technological breakthroughs to Coco Robotics. Rash also mentioned that Zhou is very good at recruiting top-tier research talent, which is crucial for the company's technological advancement.

Additionally, Coco Robotics' collaboration with Zhou is not new. Rash and his co-founder Brad Squicciarini are both UCLA alumni and even donated a robot to UCLA's research laboratory. The establishment of the new laboratory will complement Coco Robotics' existing collaboration with OpenAI, allowing Coco Robotics to use OpenAI's models and obtain robotic data for further research.

Rash emphasized that the company will not sell the collected data to other companies but will use it to improve its own automation and efficiency. They also plan to share research findings with operating cities to address infrastructure issues affecting delivery efficiency. Ultimately, Rash hopes that this lab will provide high-quality services and drive the growth of the entire delivery ecosystem at highly competitive prices.
