Apple has launched the new M5 chip, designed to significantly enhance the AI capabilities of devices such as the MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Vision Pro. This chip uses the third-generation 3-nanometer manufacturing process, with comprehensive performance upgrades, especially achieving a leap in artificial intelligence tasks.
The GPU performance of the M5 chip for AI tasks has improved by more than four times, laying the foundation for complex on-device AI applications. Its built-in 16-core neural engine can process up to 38 trillion operations per second, which is 60% faster than the neural engine in the previous generation M4 chip, and all ten GPU cores are equipped with "neural accelerators." Additionally, CPU performance has improved by up to 15% in multi-threaded processing. The chip also offers a shared memory bandwidth of 153GB/s (an increase of about 30%) and supports up to 32GB of unified memory, allowing larger AI models to run efficiently directly on the device.
Apple expects that existing AI applications and tools, such as Apple Intelligence, will see significant performance improvements from the M5 chip. Developers can access the chip's powerful AI hardware using Core ML, Metal4, and Tensor API to build and optimize next-generation AI applications.
The release of the M5 chip demonstrates Apple's continued focus on on-device AI computing power, providing users with a faster and smarter device experience.
