Amid intensifying competition in the global AI chip market, AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) has announced a significant partnership with cloud service giant Oracle. Recently, both companies released a joint statement revealing that Oracle plans to deploy up to 50,000 of AMD's latest Instinct MI450 chips in its data centers starting from the third quarter of 2026. This collaboration marks AMD's further expansion in the AI field and is expected to enhance its competitiveness against rival NVIDIA.
According to reports, these AI chips will use AMD's new "Helios" rack design, and it is expected that the deployment scale will be expanded further after 2027. However, both parties have not disclosed specific supply schedules or Oracle's share of the supply. IDC data shows that AMD's AI processor shipments reached about 100,000 units in the second quarter of this year, while NVIDIA reached as high as 1.5 million units, further highlighting that AMD still needs to strive hard in the market.
Notably, AMD has previously reached an important agreement with OpenAI. According to the agreement, OpenAI will deploy up to 6GW of AMD Instinct GPUs over the next few years, with the first 1GW of equipment planned for use in the second half of 2026. In addition, AMD issued up to 160 million stock warrants to OpenAI, allowing them to exercise the warrants based on the progress of chip deployment and stock price milestones. These initiatives clearly indicate that AMD is accelerating its layout in the AI market, striving to secure a more favorable position in the future.
In terms of technology, AMD CEO Lisa Su pointed out that the Instinct MI450 graphics card accelerator will use advanced 2nm process technology, becoming the world's first GPU accelerator product to apply this process. Compared to NVIDIA's Rubin chip, which is planned to be launched next year, the MI450 also provides powerful FP4/FP8 computing capabilities and achieves a 1.5 times improvement in memory capacity and memory bandwidth.
In the future AI market competition, AMD's collaboration with Oracle will undoubtedly inject new momentum into AMD's growth, helping it establish and develop in a fiercely competitive market.
