[AIbase Report] Tech giant Meta announced on Thursday that its AI-generated short video platform Vibes has officially launched in the European version of Meta AI application. Vibes is similar to TikTok or Instagram Reels, but its core difference lies in: every video that users see and create on the platform is generated by AI.

AI Video Streams Enter Europe: Competing with TikTok, Following Sora

Meta's move came six weeks after launching the Vibes feature in the United States. Notably, a few days after Meta announced the launch of Vibes, OpenAI released its highly anticipated AI video generation model Sora, indicating that competition in the AI video creation field is becoming increasingly intense.

The Vibes platform allows users to generate short videos through text prompts, as well as "remix" other users' videos — adding new visual effects, overlaying music, or adjusting the style. Meta stated that this is a **"social and collaborative creative experience at its core,"** aimed at encouraging users to create and build stories together with friends, and to share content directly into the Vibes feed, send it to friends, or cross-post to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.

CEO Zuckerberg Faces Strong User Backlash

Despite Meta's strong promotion of Vibes, the feature faced strong resistance when it was first launched in the United States. On the post where CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced this news feed, the comment section was "predictably" filled with negative feedback.

  • One of the most popular comments was: "Brothers, no one wants this."

  • Another popular comment was: "Bro is posting AI garbage on his own app."

Users generally expressed indifference and dislike towards the "AI-generated TikTok version."

Strategic Contradiction: Fighting Against "Unoriginal" Content While Promoting AI Content?

Meta's move also sparked confusion about its content strategy. On one hand, Meta is embracing AI-generated content; on the other hand, companies like YouTube are seeking to combat low-quality "AI garbage" — that is, large amounts of low-quality AI content flooding social media platforms.

More puzzling is that Meta had previously stated it would fight against "unoriginal" content and encouraged creators to focus on **"authentic storytelling"** rather than providing valueless short videos. The launch of Vibes seems to contradict its previous strategy of emphasizing "authenticity" and "originality."

Despite the controversy, Meta remains confident in Vibes and revealed that media generation in the Meta AI app has increased by more than ten times since the feature was launched.
