Google has taken an active defense in a defamation lawsuit, refusing to take responsibility for the "hallucinations" generated by its artificial intelligence (AI). The lawsuit was filed by anti-corporate diversity activist Robby Stack, who claims that Google's AI incorrectly linked him to allegations of sexual assault and white supremacy.
Stack's lawsuit originated from a similar case against social media company Meta. Stack claimed that Meta's AI falsely alleged his involvement in the January 6th Capitol riot. Notably, Meta reached a settlement with Stack in August this year and hired him as a consultant to help address the "ideological and political biases" in its AI chatbots.
Stack is seeking $15 million in damages from Google, but in its documents, Google stated that Stack's claims actually stemmed from his misuse of development tools, which led to the AI generating incorrect outputs. Google also mentioned that Stack did not specify the prompts he used or provide specific examples of people who were misled by these incorrect outputs. Stack has not responded immediately to this.
Although Google could choose to resolve this lawsuit through a settlement like Meta, it has decided to defend itself in court. This lawsuit has sparked widespread discussion about the responsibility of AI in information generation, especially since there have been no cases in U.S. courts where compensation was awarded for defamation caused by AI chatbots so far.
