The South Korean Police Agency announced that it will launch a pilot project using artificial intelligence for traffic management in Seoul, aiming to address congestion at intersections. The project will start in December and conduct a three-month test at an intersection in Gangnam District, southern Seoul, until February next year. The project is named "Unmanned Intersection Follow-Up Enforcement System."

The main function of this system is to issue warnings to vehicles that enter an intersection when the light is green but remain in the intersection after the light turns red. These warnings do not apply to vehicles that are forced to stop due to emergencies such as traffic accidents or vehicle breakdowns. The South Korean police stated that the system uses the latest AI video analysis technology to improve the accuracy of law enforcement. Through a device, the system can handle multiple traffic violations such as running red lights, speeding, and following too closely at the same time, thus reducing maintenance needs and improving efficiency.
The police also plan to install similar traffic cameras at 10 long-term congested intersections by 2026 and plan to expand the system to 883 busy intersections across the country by 2027. According to the current Road Traffic Act, drivers approaching signal-controlled intersections must not enter the intersection if there is congestion ahead that may cause vehicles to remain inside the intersection. Drivers who violate this regulation will be fined.
A South Korean Police Agency official said that rashly entering an intersection just because the light is green, or driven by a selfish mindset of "I'll go first," could threaten public safety. Therefore, the police advise drivers to assess the traffic conditions ahead before deciding to proceed when the light turns green.
The implementation of this pilot project marks an important step forward for South Korea in the field of smart transportation, aiming to improve urban traffic management and road safety through technological means.
