Recently, the Macquarie Dictionary of Australia announced its 2025 Word of the Year, selecting "AI slop" as the winning word, defeating other popular words such as "Ozempic face." The dictionary committee stated that this word reflects an important aspect of social changes this year, revealing the prevalence and potential issues of AI-generated content.
In a statement, the committee pointed out that "AI slop" refers to AI-generated content that lacks substantial content or value. As people increasingly rely on search engines for meaningful information, we now need to become "prompt engineers" in order to filter out truly useful content from these AI wastes. The committee emphasized that the concept of "waste" will become an important addition to the English language, and it will be used frequently in the coming years.
"AI slop" beat other popular words in the vote, including "Ozempic face," which is a facial change caused by a weight-loss drug; "blind box," a mysterious box containing unknown collectibles; "leaving no residue," used to describe someone's perfect performance; and "Roman Empire," representing various events or topics people often think about.
Notably, the committee also gave honorable mentions to some words, including "robot workers," referring to AI-driven robots that can complete tasks usually performed by humans; and "medical gender discrimination," referring to deep-rooted biases against women in medical treatment and knowledge.
It is worth noting that the public choice award also went to "AI slop," and "medical gender discrimination" and "attention economy" also received honorable mentions. The selection committee was composed of the Macquarie Dictionary editorial team, language researcher Tigo Webb from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and crossword expert David Astell.
Astell pointed out in the Sydney Morning Herald that "AI slop" is the "slopaganda" of this decade, and this word can be combined with other words to form new expressions, such as "slop music" and "corpslop."
With the continuous development of artificial intelligence technology, especially with former US President Trump frequently using AI slop content to interact with his millions of followers, society's attention to this phenomenon has increased. The Australian Electoral Commission warned that artificial intelligence is becoming more prevalent in many forms of communication. Although there are some benefits, there are also obvious negative impacts such as deepfake videos, media manipulation, and fake audio.
In response to the honor of "AI slop," ChatGPT stated that this title reminds people to be more discerning when viewing AI-generated content, which is beneficial for everyone.
