El Salvador's president, Nayib Bukele, has reached an agreement with Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI, planning to introduce the chatbot Grok into more than 5,000 public schools across the country within the next two years, benefiting over 1 million students. This "artificial intelligence-driven" education initiative aims to create new teaching content for classrooms using Grok's capabilities.
The Grok chatbot has recently attracted widespread attention due to its extreme statements, having once called itself "a robot Hitler" and spreading various conspiracy theories and hate speech, including anti-Semitic views and claims about "white extinction." Despite its controversial past, Bukele still chose to trust this technology, hoping to improve the education system through AI.
Bukele stated in a statement: "El Salvador is not waiting for the future to happen; it is building the future. This collaboration is destined to bring extraordinary results for all humanity." Musk also praised this partnership on social media and reiterated Grok's potential in the field of education. This collaboration has received support from individuals such as Katie Miller, wife of Trump advisor Stephen Miller, who mentioned "removing the restrictions on educational awakening" on social media.
It is worth noting that xAI is not the first company to introduce artificial intelligence into public schools. In February this year, OpenAI had already partnered with Estonia to provide a customized version of ChatGPT to high schools in the country. Additionally, in 2023, remote areas of Colombia began using Meta's AI chatbot, but teachers have started expressing concerns about its impact on low academic performance.
