Recently, Disney sent a cease-and-desist notice to Google, accusing Google of infringing on numerous copyrighted works of Disney in its artificial intelligence models, including well-known characters such as "Frozen," "Deadpool," "Star Wars," and "Guardians of the Galaxy." According to a report by The Verge, Disney stated in the letter that Google's AI model generated content similar to its works, constituting a "massive" copyright infringement.

This notice was issued on Wednesday, just before Disney announced a $1 billion partnership with OpenAI. Under this agreement, users of Sora AI will be able to create videos using over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. These AI-generated videos will also appear on Disney's streaming platform, Disney Plus, which Disney CEO Bob Iger expressed excitement about last month.

In the letter, Disney pointed out that Google's AI models, such as Gemini, Veo, Imagen, and Nano Banana, are acting as "virtual vending machines," flooding the market with infringing works and thus generating significant profits. Disney also mentioned that they had tried to communicate with Google but found Google very passive in implementing copyright protection measures.

Google spokesperson Julie McAlister responded that Google has always maintained a good relationship with Disney and will continue communication with it. She also emphasized that Google uses data from the public internet to build AI and has implemented innovative copyright control mechanisms, such as Google-extended and YouTube's Content ID, aimed at providing content control to websites and copyright holders. Additionally, the notice from Disney also mentioned the case of a character imitating "Treebeard Groot" and other Marvel characters.
