Recently, Disney and OpenAI announced a three-year partnership agreement that allows OpenAI to use over 200 Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars characters for creation, mainly for Sora video and ChatGPT image generation. In a press release issued on Thursday, both parties stated that this collaboration will bring generated licensed short videos and artworks to Disney+ platform for the audience, but the specific video selection criteria have not been disclosed yet.

According to the agreement, although OpenAI can use these famous characters, participants do not need to worry about their images or voices being used in films, as the agreement does not include the likeness and voice of real characters. This means that live-action characters from Marvel and Star Wars will only appear in classic animated or illustrated forms.

In addition, as part of the agreement, Disney will make a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI, becoming an important client of OpenAI, thus using its products to develop new tools and experiences, including services for the Disney+ platform and ChatGPT for its employees. Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that this collaboration will help them expand the boundaries of storytelling by utilizing generative AI while respecting and protecting creators and their works.

This collaboration is a move by OpenAI to actively respond to pressures from Hollywood and other fields after launching the Sora2 video generation tool, which faced widespread criticism for its near-simulations of copyrighted materials. To respond to this pressure, OpenAI has pledged to sign licensing agreements with companies like Disney to ensure the legality of its video generation tools.

At the same time, Disney has taken a firm stance against other companies, issuing warnings to Google to stop infringing on its intellectual property and demanding that Google immediately cease generating content based on Disney's works. Additionally, Disney has issued similar warnings to companies such as Character.ai and Meta, demonstrating its strong position in protecting intellectual property.
