OpenAI recently announced an important update to its chatbot ChatGPT, primarily aimed at improving the safety of young users. This update introduced four new principles specifically for users under 18, ensuring they have a safer experience when using ChatGPT.
OpenAI stated that the new model guidelines will put the safety of teenagers first. This means that during interactions with minor users, even if users express a desire for free thinking, ChatGPT will prioritize guiding them towards safer options. The update also emphasizes that ChatGPT will encourage teenagers to build offline relationships and set clear expectations in their interactions.
When communicating with minor users, ChatGPT will respond with respect and gentleness, avoiding a condescending approach. Additionally, ChatGPT will clearly state that its interaction style is based on understanding and care for teenagers, rather than treating them as adults.
This update comes in response to a lawsuit filed by a couple against OpenAI earlier this year, in which they alleged that ChatGPT had a negative role in their son's suicide. According to the chat records they provided, although ChatGPT sometimes suggested that their son call for help or talk to someone, it also gave inappropriate advice on certain sensitive topics. OpenAI responded, stating that the complete chat records they provided showed no causal relationship between ChatGPT and the incident, and that more than 100 help reminders from ChatGPT were clearly listed in the records.
Through these updates, OpenAI hopes to further protect the mental health of teenagers, prevent similar incidents, and enhance user safety in the application of AI technology.
