Technology media Axios recently released a data report written by Chartbeat, revealing the devastating impact of Google's "AI Overviews" feature on content publishers. The report points out that as AI generates answers directly at the top of search results, the demand for users to click through to original websites has drastically declined.

Traffic Collapse: Small Websites Are the Biggest Victims
Data shows that websites of different sizes have suffered varying degrees of loss in recommended traffic, with small publishers, who have the weakest risk resistance, being hit the hardest:
Small Publishers (daily views 1k-1w): Lost up to 60% of Google's recommended traffic over the past two years.Medium Publishers (daily views 1w-10w): Traditional search traffic dropped by 47%.Large Publishers (daily views >10w): Traffic decreased by 22%.
Lifebuoy Fails: AI Traffic Accounts for Less Than 1%
Although some publishers tried to optimize for AI chatbots, the results were not encouraging:
Very Low Conversion Rate: Although traffic brought by AI chatbots increased by more than 200% year-on-year, it still accounts for less than 1% of total traffic.
Useless Redirects: Research found that most users who were redirected to original web pages via AI were not there to read the content, but simply to verify the accuracy of the AI-generated summary.
Declining Distribution Channels: The traffic from "Google Discover," which was once highly anticipated, also decreased by 15% in the past year.
Facing a "major artery bleed" in search engine traffic, the content industry is being forced to transform:
De-platforming: Large platforms are actively turning to email subscriptions (Newsletters) and direct traffic operations, trying to build an independent audience not controlled by algorithms.
Increased Survival Threshold: Due to the high time and resource costs required to build an independent brand, small content creators without background face the risk of being completely abandoned by the industry.
The report concludes that Google search recommendation views fell by a total of 34% between 2025, and this AI-driven search transformation is rewriting the logic of internet traffic distribution.
