OpenAI, which once insisted on an "ad-free" experience, has finally given in to commercialization pressures. This Sunday, an OpenAI spokesperson officially confirmed that the company plans to start showing ads to users of the free version of ChatGPT and the Go edition in the United States in the coming weeks. This move marks the beginning of a large-scale monetization strategy for the world's most popular AI chat application.
It is reported that the advertising technology giant Criteo has been selected as one of the first partners, joining the ChatGPT ad testing project. Criteo is currently recruiting potential advertisers, requiring an initial advertising budget of between $50,000 and $100,000 per client (approximately 345,000 to 690,000 RMB).
Insufficient Income? A Monetization Strategy Forced by Expensive Computing Power
The recent "monetization" by OpenAI comes with increasing financial pressure in the generative AI field. As the number of ChatGPT users around the world surges, the cost of the computing infrastructure that supports its operation (especially GPU computing power and electricity consumption) is rising at an alarming rate. To maintain expansion in a competitive industry, OpenAI must find diversified sources of income beyond subscriptions (Plus membership).
Advertising Formats: Deep Integration of Text and Visual Materials
Unlike traditional search engine sidebar ads, OpenAI suggests that advertisers provide more versions of text and visual materials to achieve higher exposure frequency. This means that future ChatGPT ads may be embedded more naturally and interactively into the AI conversation flow, rather than simply being banner ads.
Although OpenAI once took a cautious approach towards ads, facing increasing pressure from competitors like Anthropic and massive R&D investments, taking the path of "ad-supported free services" became almost inevitable. For users, this means that in the future, they may need to pay a certain attention cost while enjoying cutting-edge AI technology.
With the pilot launch in the U.S. market, this ad system is likely to be expanded globally in the future. When "AI assistants" start learning how to "sell products," OpenAI's business empire will cross over from a single tool attribute to a more complex media platform attribute.
