OpenAI has officially launched a browser extension called "Codex for Chrome," aimed at providing desktop Chrome users with more direct Codex intelligent support. Currently, the extension is fully compatible with macOS and Windows platforms.

Different from previous AI assistants, this Chrome extension focuses on "non-intrusive" collaboration in its design. It can deeply utilize the browser environment for Web application testing without interfering with the user's normal browsing operations. More impressively, it has the ability to retrieve context information across tabs and directly call the developer tools (DevTools), thereby accurately completing various complex tasks in real usage scenarios.

The OpenAI team found through research that most of the users' core workflows are actually concentrated within the browser with the introduction of the "Computer Use (Computer Operation)" feature. This dedicated extension is designed to optimize this high-frequency scenario, making Codex more efficient when handling web-based tasks, filling a technical gap that traditional plugins or APIs could not reach.

Data shows that the Codex application ecosystem is experiencing explosive growth. Its weekly active users have now exceeded 4 million, representing an eightfold increase since the beginning of this year.

Industry analysts believe that OpenAI's move is clear: on one hand, it simplifies the operation path to improve efficiency for general users in daily work and information retrieval; on the other hand, it continues to focus on the developer market, offering more professional technical support.

Starting today, users can easily install the extension through the "Plugins" menu within the Codex app, to start a more intelligent and immersive office experience.
