Recently, the technology industry has seen a significant development: ByteDance has initiated the spin-off and independent financing process of its AI pharmaceutical business. This move marks a critical step in ByteDance's layout in the field of bio-computation, transitioning from pure technological research and development to industrialization exploration.

It is reported that the newly established company will continue to be controlled by ByteDance. The original core team of AI pharmaceuticals, algorithm platform, and existing pipeline assets will be integrated into the new entity, and will continue to receive computing power support from Volcano Engine. The team was established in 2021, with a membership of about 50 people, comprising algorithm experts and experienced professionals from the AI4S (AI for Science) field. Previously, the internal protein structure prediction research team at ByteDance has also completed integration, jointly supporting the scientific foundation of the new company.

The business achievements are the core logic behind this financing. In recent years, the team has made significant progress in molecular structure prediction, including the release of open-source models such as Protenix and Seedfold, building high-precision prediction capabilities for complex biological systems. In practical applications, the platform Anew Labs launched by the team covers key areas such as protein-ligand dynamic structure prediction, free energy calculation, and full-atom molecular generation. Particularly in April of this year, at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Immunology, the team first disclosed an antibody-blocking small molecule project targeting the IL-17 family, demonstrating its ability to achieve the entire process from target discovery to molecular design using AI technology in specific drug pipelines.

Industry analysts believe that this independent operation aims to establish a more flexible organizational structure to adapt to the characteristics of the pharmaceutical R&D industry, which has a long cycle and high barriers. In the context where global pharmaceutical companies are facing high R&D costs and efficiency bottlenecks, AI4S has become a new driving force for breaking through limitations. As seen from the evolution of Google DeepMind's AlphaFold series, AI technology has deeply penetrated the core logic of drug design. By entering the industrialization stage, ByteDance aims to explore the path of Chinese AI4S moving from model research to commercial validation.

Regarding this adjustment, an internal source stated that biotechnology has its unique industrial logic. Through independent operations, the team will gain stronger decision-making flexibility, not only helping to attract top talents but also focusing more on how to transform cutting-edge algorithms into innovative drugs with real clinical value.
