Musk's xAI has directly embedded its large model Grok into the core of Microsoft Office. According to multiple financial media reports on July 21, xAI has launched a free Microsoft 365 add-in called Grok For Excel for Microsoft Excel, which is now available on the Microsoft Marketplace and is compatible with Word and PowerPoint. This means that Grok is no longer limited to chat windows but has become a data analyst that can be easily accessed within office software.
The logic of using this add-in closely mirrors real office scenarios: when users select a data area in Excel, they can directly ask Grok about changes in the data, the reasons behind them, and the key points. Grok's answers will clearly reference the corresponding data cells, not giving conclusions out of thin air. It can also understand formula syntax, perform common editing operations such as calculating averages, sorting, and filling, and generate charts that can be inserted into the worksheet with one click. In other words, tasks that used to require writing functions, dragging formulas, and manually drawing charts can now be advanced by simply speaking to the data.
More importantly, Grok does not only focus on the small selected data in the table. Through connectors, it can extract contextual information from emails, SharePoint, or Google Drive, integrating scattered documents into the current analysis. This capability makes Excel-based Q&A no longer an isolated island but allows for more comprehensive judgments by combining email exchanges, team documents, and external files. When Grok is embedded as a free add-in into the trio of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, the boundary between office software and conversational AI is further blurred.
