Google announced that it will stop providing Google Assistant services on the Android and Wear OS platforms starting September 4, 2026, and will be fully replaced by the generative AI assistant Gemini. Google has already sent notification emails to existing users, and this change will affect Android phones, tablets, Wear OS smartwatches, earphones, and in-car systems with Android Auto.
Google stated that after the service migration is completed, users will no longer be able to use Google Assistant or switch back to the previous version. This update is expected to gradually cover all users within a few weeks. However, some cars running Google's system will continue to support Google Assistant. Additionally, Gemini will expand to more devices in the future, including Google TV, Google Home smart speakers, and smart displays.
According to the information, Google had previously planned to shut down Google Assistant-related services in 2025, but later postponed the date to 2026. This adjustment indicates that Google is accelerating its transition from traditional voice assistants to generative AI assistants based on large language models (LLMs).
Compared to Google Assistant, which relies on pre-set instructions and deterministic logic, Gemini has stronger natural language understanding and complex task processing capabilities, but its reliability also faces new challenges. The industry is concerned about whether large language models based on probabilistic models can maintain stable performance in high-frequency scenarios such as controlling smart home devices and performing basic phone operations, and avoid task failures caused by model inference uncertainty.
