Elon Musk's AI encyclopedia project, Grokipedia, has been exposed for long-term stagnation in content updates, failing to achieve its goal as an "AI version of Wikipedia." According to a recent investigation by Lawfare, since April this year, the page update function of Grokipedia has basically stalled, with no entries completed in the past three months, and user submission edit requests have remained in a pending state for a long time.

Grokipedia was launched at the end of last year, positioning itself as a knowledge platform generated by artificial intelligence, seen by Musk as an alternative to traditional crowdsourced encyclopedias like Wikipedia. The Lawfare investigation found that neither popular pages nor low-attention pages showed recent updates, and the issue was not limited to specific fields but existed across different topics and page views.

Investigators initially thought that Grokipedia might only restrict editing of sensitive pages, so they tried to submit a non-controversial factual modification to the SpaceX page. However, this request was not processed, and similar edit requests submitted by other users after the SpaceX listing event on June 12 remained in a waiting state.

This situation contrasts sharply with Grokipedia's early update efficiency. Previously, some pages on the platform could be modified within minutes, but now, after months of lack of maintenance, it is difficult for Grokipedia to compete with mature knowledge platforms like Wikipedia in terms of real-time updates. In contrast, Wikipedia relies on a global volunteer community to continuously update content to adapt to news events and knowledge changes.

Additionally, Grokipedia had previously faced questions about content sources. Reports indicated that some entries on the platform directly quoted content from Wikipedia, and even referenced controversial sources, raising concerns about the reliability of AI-generated knowledge and the content review mechanism.

As AI-based encyclopedia products gradually emerge, ensuring knowledge update efficiency, source credibility, and open editing mechanisms will become key challenges for the long-term development of such platforms.
