Recently, OpenAI officially announced the official release of the Linux version of the ChatGPT desktop preview application. This move further expands the ecosystem of its desktop products, offering developers and everyday users of specific Linux systems a more convenient localized interaction experience.
According to the information, this preview application can run directly in supported system environments and fully integrates regular conversations, ChatGPT Work, and Codex features for programming scenarios. To adapt to different users' distribution needs, the official also provides .deb and .rpm format installation packages for x64 and arm64 architectures.
In terms of specific system compatibility, this released version mainly covers mainstream long-term support and stable distributions. These include Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, as well as Fedora 43 and 44 systems.
Looking back at recent developments, OpenAI made a major integration of its desktop application in July this year, upgrading the previous Codex into a new multifunctional desktop client that combines chatting, work mode, and programming assistant. After the update, users can not only seamlessly retain their existing tasks and project progress but can also customize their own icon styles in the application settings according to personal preferences.
