On August 13, OpenAI released a blog post introducing the Computer History feature as an optional update, replacing the previous Chronicle research preview. This new feature brings activity memory and timeline support to the Mac version of the ChatGPT desktop application. Unlike Chronicle, which relied on screenshots to build a memory library, the new feature directly uses macOS accessibility features to record interaction events, including clicks, input, keyboard shortcuts, and app switching, converting user Mac activities into structured memories.

This mechanism allows ChatGPT and Codex to quickly generate work summaries or help users find recently viewed files without needing to re-explain the context each time. Essentially, OpenAI is upgrading the concept of "context" from being manually provided by users to being automatically accumulated by the system—understanding what you're doing, no longer relying on screenshots, but rather on real behavior traces at the operating system level.
Privacy Design: Local Storage for 48 Hours, Then Erased
In terms of privacy handling, Computer History automatically excludes private browsing activities, and interaction events are stored locally for up to 48 hours before being deleted after the server generates memories from them. Pure text memories are retained locally until the user manually deletes them. This "event cloud upload, original content destruction" design aims to strike a balance between enhanced capabilities and data minimization, addressing concerns about the previous screenshot method's excessive collection of screen content.
Currently, OpenAI only invites ChatGPT Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers to experience this feature. Business and Enterprise subscriptions require administrators to enable it first, allowing workspace members to use it. The feature is not available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK initially, possibly due to stricter local data protection regulations. As AI assistants evolve from "conversational tools" to "understanding work partners," system-level memory features like Computer History may become a focal point in the next phase of competition—but user acceptance of "being recorded all the time" will determine whether it becomes a useful standard feature or another privacy pitfall.
