Microsoft announced that Mico, the yellow blob that makes expressions in Copilot's voice mode, will no longer appear in the chat interface. According to a Microsoft support page, Mico will be moved to the Learn Live learning platform, allowing this virtual character to "have more content to react to." This change was first reported by GeekWire.
Mico was launched in Copilot's voice mode last October, less than a year ago. At that time, Microsoft's AI business CEO Mustafa Suleiman presented it as an attempt to give the chatbot a "sense of identity," with this little blob making expressions and animations in real-time based on user conversations. Now, its departure adds it to the list of virtual assistants Microsoft has cut over the years — from Clippy, the paperclip, to voice assistant Cortana and search dog Rover, none of which have escaped.
"Learning" Consolidation, Imminent
Microsoft wrote on its support page: "Mico helped us understand warmth, expressiveness, and how people want to talk to AI, and these experiences are shaping the future of Copilot." The company said it would "gradually" remove Mico, and the real reason behind this is the plan to merge the Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot applications. This adjustment comes shortly after the AI department reorganization — Jacob Andreu took over Copilot, while Suleiman stepped back to focus on developing new AI models.
Although Mico has been removed before being replaced, it has not gained nothing. In less than a year, it has validated the value and boundaries of "human-like expressions" in voice interactions, and left references for Copilot's next form. When the new Copilot after the merger appears, users may face a more restrained but more unified AI assistant.
