Recently, Anthropic has formally signed a cloud computing agreement worth up to $35 billion with Lambda, a cloud service provider supported by NVIDIA, equivalent to about 235.752 billion yuan in RMB, further strengthening its massive AI infrastructure foundation.
This major deal involves complex industrial collaboration among multiple parties. The data centers covered by the agreement are located in Nueces County, Texas, USA, and were actually built by Hut8, a Bitcoin mining company and data center developer, while the leasing rights belong to NVIDIA. Weeks ago, NVIDIA had already locked in the computing power resources of this Texas campus through signing a contract. In this structure, Lambda will directly use the data centers developed by Hut8 and deploy chips purchased from NVIDIA, thereby providing continuous and stable cloud computing services for Anthropic, without needing to bear the initial heavy asset investment in site construction. It is currently unclear how much service fees Lambda needs to pay to NVIDIA.
Facing the computing power bottleneck it has encountered this year due to its products being highly market-recognized, Anthropic has been actively securing cloud computing resources recently. Earlier this month, Anthropic also reached a $45 billion computing power leasing agreement with another NVIDIA-supported "new cloud" vendor, Nscale, planning to activate NVIDIA's Vera Rubin chip computing power by the end of 2027. At the same time, Hut8 is also developing other data centers equipped with Google's TPUs for Anthropic, forming a diverse complement to the NVIDIA hardware ecosystem, with Google also providing financial guarantees for this project.
Notably, capital operations in the computing power industry are also subject to dynamic regulatory adjustments. In July this year, NVIDIA announced a plan aimed at providing credit support to "new cloud" vendors like Lambda in exchange for cloud revenue sharing; however, according to related media reports, due to concerns about antitrust compliance, NVIDIA has recently paused some of the transactions under this plan. It remains to be seen whether Lambda needs to share part of its revenue generated at the Texas site with NVIDIA. As major AI giants continue to invest heavily in computing infrastructure, the global competition for the underlying hardware of artificial intelligence is entering a more complex and deep-level stage of confrontation.
