The Baidu Foundation Model Research Department (BMU) has recently completed a key talent deployment. On September 3rd, Sun Tianxiang, the head of BMU, announced internally that he had recruited a senior researcher Wu Qin (alias) from a Frontier Lab in North America, to strengthen the pre-training capabilities of the ERNIE large model. Wu Qin has participated in the development of multiple generations of large models over the past two years, but his specific background remains undisclosed.
At the same time, Wei Haoran, a former researcher at DeepSeek, officially transferred to BMU and now serves as the head of the multimodal algorithm team for ERNIE. Wei Haoran joined Baidu in early 2026. His team released the Unlimited OCR model in June this year, achieving the top global score in the OmniDocBench benchmark test, setting a new record for end-to-end OCR performance. Previously, he led the development of versions V3.2 and V4 at DeepSeek, as well as the DeepSeek-OCR series of open-source models, and has extensive experience in developing multimodal large models.
It is reported that Sun Tianxiang, born in 1997, took office as the head of BMU in July this year and joined the Baidu Model Committee and the Technical Strategy Committee. With the core team in place, he is driving a dual upgrade of the ERNIE large model in both organizational and technical aspects, further aligning with the international frontiers of model development by introducing top talents.
