Recently, the global artificial intelligence field has witnessed a highly anticipated major acquisition. NVIDIA officially announced that it has agreed to acquire the open-source AI platform Hugging Face for 12.93 billion US dollars (approximately 87.092 billion Chinese yuan). This major news instantly sparked a frenzy in the tech community. Subsequently, Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, publicly posted an article detailing the behind-the-scenes logic and future plans of this acquisition.

As a key hub for open-source model developers globally, Hugging Face has gathered over 18 million developers, researchers, and creators. The platform's ecosystem is extremely prosperous, with more than 3 million models, 500,000 datasets, and 1 million applications shared so far. Over 200,000 companies have used this platform to find, evaluate, customize, and deploy AI technology. Notably, NVIDIA itself is the largest contributor of open models and data to Hugging Face, and its contribution continues to grow. It has already released more than 500 models and 250 open datasets on the platform.

Regarding the widely concerned motives behind the acquisition, Jensen Huang stated that NVIDIA hopes to leverage its strong infrastructure, engineering R&D capabilities, and global reach to take Hugging Face's open AI platform to an unprecedented scale. He also solemnly promised that after the acquisition, Hugging Face will continue to maintain its open and independent nature, fully supporting various open-source and open-weight models, and adhering to the development path of multi-cloud and multi-accelerator environments.

When talking about the value of open-weight technology, Jensen Huang pointed out that this model allows startups, enterprises, universities, and public institutions to use advanced AI capabilities without having to train models from scratch. This not only helps to evenly distribute AI technological leadership across more industries and communities but also enables organizations to flexibly select suitable models for specific tasks, thereby making AI more efficiently applied in real-world scenarios such as factories, hospitals, farms, classrooms, and small and medium-sized enterprises.

Jensen Huang emphasized that NVIDIA will never transform Hugging Face into a closed entry point that serves only its own hardware. Instead, the company aims to further support and enhance the entire open AI ecosystem through its scalability. With this major merger, the global landscape of open-source AI is expected to undergo profound changes and impacts in the future.
