Bloomberg reported on September 15 that the co-chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, David Sacks, said in an interview on Monday that top artificial intelligence companies Anthropic and OpenAI should create safe products and proceed at their own pace when necessary, without government intervention.
Sacks agreed with the views expressed by former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan in a post on social media on Sunday: large artificial intelligence companies are responsible for their models, and they may face civil or even criminal litigation if they produce unsafe technology.
Sacks also criticized a recent article by Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic. In the article, Amodei called on companies to slow down AI development and suggested that the U.S. government grant Anthropic and its competitors antitrust exemptions so that they can communicate about the "safe dialogue" needed to coordinate slowing down development.
Sacks had previously criticized OpenAI and Anthropic on his social media account: Stop pretending your motivation for slowing down development is entirely for "the good of others." If your products lead to truly destructive cyberattacks, you will face significant liability risks; the market itself is already punishing models that behave unpredictably or without authorization.
