Mozilla announced a partnership with the French artificial intelligence startup Mistral, bringing the Mistral model into the Firefox browser to support the currently testing AI browsing experience "Firefox Smart Window."

The Smart Window is designed for complex tasks across multiple browser tabs and browsing sessions, helping users understand search content, find previously browsed information, organize related tabs, and answer questions based on the browsing context. This collaboration also marks the first entry of this feature into the international market, as the Smart Window was previously available only in the United States and Canada in English. Now it has launched in France and supports French, with the UK and Germany expected to follow later this year. Mozilla and Mistral also plan to optimize the model for different regional languages, dialects, and cultural backgrounds.
Privacy mechanisms are an essential part of this collaboration. Mistral stated that the Smart Window will not default to saving conversations on Mozilla's servers, and the partner has committed to zero data retention. Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, CEO of Mozilla, stated that the browser should maintain an open environment, providing space for innovation from different AI providers, rather than becoming an entry point for a single company's closed ecosystem.
This collaboration demonstrates that while Firefox introduces generative AI, it continues to prioritize privacy protection, an open ecosystem, and localization in its product design.
