On Monday, OpenAI announced the establishment of a "Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence Advisory Group," supported by the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, aimed at introducing perspectives from the mathematics community to evaluate and provide recommendations on the company's mathematical research achievements. The initial group consists of nine mathematicians who will serve as a bridge between the mathematics community and the public, assessing the academic significance of OpenAI's new achievements and coordinating related publications.
This move comes after OpenAI recently announced a solution to the Navier-Stokes equations Millennium Prize problem. OpenAI also stated that the same internal model has solved more than 100 unresolved problems in multiple areas of mathematics, sparking some mathematicians' concerns about AI's rapid involvement in cutting-edge mathematical research. At the beginning of this month, 25 Fields Medalists signed an open letter expressing concerns about the potential impact of AI labs competing to solve well-known mathematical problems on academic research.
