Microsoft is reportedly planning significant changes to the distribution mechanism of its generative AI service, Copilot, and is considering removing the previous restriction that limited its use to only subscribers. Under the proposed changes, primary subscribers of the Microsoft 365 Family and Premium plans would be allowed to share Copilot and related AI features with up to five family members.
According to tech media site Neowin, after this adjustment is implemented, subscribers will also have the ability to manage AI access permissions for minor family members. Currently, the official Microsoft support page still states that Copilot features within these plans are exclusively for the primary subscriber, and the exact release date, applicable regions, and specific sharing limits have not been officially announced.

In terms of usage management, Microsoft plans to consolidate the Copilot usage limits scattered across various applications into a unified pool, which can be shared among family members. It will also allow Premium and Pro subscribers to purchase additional AI usage when their quota runs low. Previously, the AI capabilities embedded in Copilot in applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Designer were not shared along with traditional Office applications and storage benefits.
Notably, this adjustment coincides with Microsoft's restructuring of its family plan benefits. According to Microsoft's official documents, starting October 7, 2026, new and renewed Family and Premium subscriptions will be adjusted to provide a shared 2TB OneDrive storage space for the entire family. Existing users will gradually transition to this model when they renew their subscriptions starting April 1, 2027. If the Copilot sharing policy is ultimately implemented, it will further accelerate the penetration and popularization of generative AI in consumer-level family scenarios.
